The real story

Barcelona 1992 was the first Games where badminton was a full Olympic medal sport. On 4 August, 21-year-old Susi Susanti came back from a game down to beat South Korea's Bang Soo-hyun 5–11, 11–5, 11–3. It was Indonesia's first Olympic gold since the country first competed in 1952, and the first for any Southeast Asian nation.

Hours later Alan Budikusuma won the men's singles. The two were engaged at the time and later married, and Indonesia called them its golden couple. Susi's tears on the podium as Indonesia Raya played became one of the country's most remembered sporting images.
