The real story

On 20 July 1969 Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon, watched live by hundreds of millions of people. The famous bootprint photo was taken by Buzz Aldrin, part of a test of how lunar dust behaves underfoot.

With no air, wind or water, there's almost nothing to wear those prints away. Only a slow rain of micrometeorites, which could take millions of years. Twelve people walked on the Moon. The last left in December 1972. Nobody has been back since.
