The real story

Long-distance buses on Java's north-coast highway often carry custom multi-tone air horns that play a little tune instead of a honk. Kids near Jepara, Central Java, started standing by the road with cardboard signs, shouting 'om telolet om', roughly 'mister, play your horn, mister'. When the driver obliged, they filmed it and lost their minds.

The videos spread on Indonesian social media, then fans flooded the accounts of international DJs with the phrase. Around 21 December 2016 Zedd, Martin Garrix and DJ Snake started posting it, and it trended worldwide while most people outside Indonesia had no idea what it meant. Officials later warned that the custom horns break vehicle rules and that standing at the edge of a highway is dangerous.
