The real story
When a letter or parcel can't be delivered or returned, it ends up at the US Postal Service's Mail Recovery Center in Atlanta. It's one of the few places where staff may open mail, and they do it like detectives, looking for any clue to a sender or recipient: a name, a return address, a phone number inside.
The shelves hold the strangest things: wedding rings, photos, letters, even baby shoes. When nothing inside points anywhere, items are eventually sold or recycled. But sometimes a child's drawing contains just enough to get it home.
