The real story
The final street payphones stood on Seventh Avenue at 50th Street in Manhattan. A small crowd came to watch them go, and the city took one to the Museum of the City of New York. They were replaced by LinkNYC kiosks, which offer free Wi-Fi and phone calls.
At their peak there were tens of thousands of payphones across the city. For decades a coin was all it took to call home, call a cab or call someone you missed.
