The real story
Loggerhead hatchlings dig out together at night and head for the brightest horizon, normally moonlight on the sea. Then they disappear into what scientists call the 'lost years', drifting with floating seaweed far offshore. Only about one in a thousand reaches adulthood.
Each stretch of coast has its own magnetic signature, and turtles seem to imprint on it as hatchlings. Twenty to thirty years later, after crossing whole oceans, females use it to find their way back to the same region, often the same beach, to lay their own eggs.
