The real story
Most lost socks never leave the house. In front-loading machines they get trapped in the rubber door seal or slip through the gap between the drum and the tub, and repair technicians regularly pull them out of drain-pump filters. Others cling to a duvet cover with static, fall behind the machine, or get paired wrong and hide in someone else's drawer.
The orphan sock has a long second career, though. A sock puppet is about the simplest puppet there is, and one of the most famous, Shari Lewis's Lamb Chop, first appeared on American TV in 1956 and kept performing for decades. All it takes is a sock, two buttons and someone willing to lend it a voice.
