The real story
Instant noodles were invented in Japan by Momofuku Ando, who launched Chicken Ramen in 1958 after months of experiments in a shed behind his house. They reached Indonesia in 1969 with a brand called Supermi, and Indomie followed in 1972. Within a few decades a noodle packet had become part of everyday life, from boarding rooms to mountain campsites.
According to the World Instant Noodles Association, Indonesians ate about 14.7 billion servings in 2024, roughly 52 per person. 'Tanggal tua', the lean days before the next allowance or payday, is a phrase every student and young worker knows, and for many of them the month ends with a packet of noodles, an egg if there is one, and a call from home.
